About Speaker Test

Check your left and right speakers or headphones. Press Left, Right or Both and a repeating chime plays from that side only, so a swapped or silent channel is obvious at once. You can switch the chime for a steady low (100 Hz), mid (440 Hz) or high (4 kHz) tone.

The sweep glides from 20 Hz to 20 kHz over 20 seconds with a live frequency readout. Note where the sound first appears to see how deep your speakers go, and press Stop when it fades at the top to find the highest tone you can hear.

All sound is generated in the page, nothing is downloaded. Start with your volume low, especially with headphones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test left and right speakers?

Press Left, then Right. Each plays a chime from that side only. If Left comes from the right, your speakers or headphones are swapped; if one side is silent, check the cable, the port and the balance setting in your system sound settings.

What frequencies can humans hear?

Roughly 20 Hz to 20 kHz, but the top end fades with age. Many adults stop hearing somewhere between 12 and 17 kHz. Use the sweep and press Stop when the tone disappears.

Why can't I hear the low end of the sweep?

Small and laptop speakers often cannot reproduce anything below about 150 to 200 Hz. Headphones or a speaker with a subwoofer usually go much lower.
